Zirconium oxide (ZrO₂) is a recognized chemically inert material, acting like a transparent protective layer on a metal. At room temperature:
Short-term contact with water does not cause a chemical reaction.
Long-term immersion maintains structural integrity.
The oxide layer formed on the surface prevents further reactions.
Experimental data shows that pure zirconia, after immersion in water at 25°C for 30 days, exhibits a mass change of less than 0.1%. This stability makes it an ideal material for dental implants and artificial joints.
Performance Differences in Different Scenarios
The water resistance of zirconia varies depending on the usage environment:
Ordinary Environments: Completely fine with daily water contact; dishwasher cleaning is also possible.
Extreme Environments: High-temperature water vapor above 200°C may accelerate surface micro-corrosion.
Special Forms: Nanoscale zirconia powder requires moisture-proof storage.
Composite Materials: Zirconia ceramics containing other components require separate testing.
